Flood?

This is our neighbor Tom in the street.

Here in Cheyenne water always seems scarce. We have watering restrictions because of the "drought" we are in. However, I heard the director of the Department of Agriculture on the radio recently and he said that at some point it can't be considered a drought anymore and we have to come to terms with...gasp...climate change. Yes, even the conservative rancher director has had to accept that we are facing climate change. With this change comes not only long boughts (will it ever end?) of things like drought but also wacky and wild weather.

My father, who lives in Omaha, NE, has had numerous stories for the past year of their very extreme and unusual weather. Tornadoes galore, for starters, and recently crazy hail and wind storms which caused him to have to re-roof and re-side his house. Now, granted Nebraska has always been known for its summer tornadoes and thunderstorms, but they are having much, much more this year. They had the amount of rain average for the year in about four weeks.

Well this week Cheyenne saw some of this wacky weather when we got hit with a torrential downpour of water. As you can see from the pictures we had a little of a flash flood in our neighborhood. Apparently, in other parts of Cheyenne whole cars were under water. Cheyenne is not equipped with the storm sewers and drainage system for this kind of rain, because, well it doesn't rain like that here. Until now.

Also, this week Andrew has been sick. He has now had diarrhea for 10 days and the doctor believes it to be a virus. He said that as long he doesn't get dehydrated he'll be fine and we can't do much for him. As you can imagine his diaper rash is out of this world. He screams and cries crocodile tears everytime he gets changed. I have been using a butt cream that the doctor suggested, but if any of you moms out there have a great solution to diaper rash I'm all ears.

Poor Andrew!!! I can't imagine 10 days... I haven't had to deal with diaper rash so I don't know about creams, but I was wondering if you covered his bum in oil or vaseline if it would protect his bum from the poo??? I don't know, that might make it hotter for him. I'm just thinking out loud.

I had no idea Cheyenne's had flooding. Billie never says anything.

Nakedness and fresh air is good for rashes and I've heard that maybe cloth diapers help as well.
I was just going to post something about the flood today. You guys had it on the street a lot more than we did over here.

I tried the nakedness thing and Andrew walked right up to me and peed all over me...the diaper was quickly put back on. I think the nakedness needs to be done outside and we have had a recent problem with a bees nest. Ryan has now been stung twice. So, I'm a little afraid to take Andrew into our backyard, and well someone will turn me in if I let him run naked in the front yard! The cloth diaper is a good idea though. Chenoa- where do you get your cloth diapers? Is it possible to just buy a few? Most of the sites I've seen before sell huge packages of diapers to last until the kid is 2.

There are lots of good cloth diaper sites. Here are a few:

abbyslane.com
treecitydiapers.com
cottonbabies.com

You can buy individual dipes, you don't have to buy them in large quantities. If you're buying for the purpose of trying to eliminate rash, you might want to go with a prefold (the more old-fashioned kind) or a fitted b/c they are not covered in PUL (a type of fabric that doesn't breathe). A fitted would be the easiest type to use. The PUL can get hot like a disposable diaper. You can let Andrew roam free w/o a water proof cover so that his diaper "breathes" and that will help, but you definitely wouldn't want him sitting on your nice sofa, IYKWIM. You can also buy wool or fleece covers that will be water-proof but still allow the bum to breathe. Wool covers can get expensive though. (if you worry about wool being too hot, it's actually cooler than a disposable b/c it can breathe).

Email me if you decide to go this route and I can give you more specifics.

Chenoa- I just bought my first cloth diaper. I went with the fitted Bum Genius. Maybe I'll be a convert. I had considered cloth from the beginning, but I was so overwhelmed with Andrew when he was a newborn I just couldn't imagine more laundry. Now that he is older though and typically has fewer diaper changes during the day this could work. We'll see.

Yay! so exciting. I think you'll find it really pretty easy. I love that we never have to worry about running out of diapers. I don't have any bumgenius fitted diapers, but we have a lot of the bumgenius pocket diapers and they work great! It's what I always use for a nighttime diaper b/c it's so reliable. I never worry about leaks.

I'd love to hear what you think after you try it out.

Boudreaux's Butt Paste---you can get it at Walmart...it is definitely the best of the best....its also great for chapped lips if you can get past putting "butt paste" on them!

Beth-
We always swore by Boudreaux's, but after seeing the Doctor he told us to use a concoction of athlete's foot cream (antifungal), Polysporin (antibacterial) and Desitin. It isn't working. We are now on day 15 and still diarrhea. So, I think you're right. I'm going back to the "butt paste" to see if it helps. Unfortunately though it won't stop the diarrhea.

As far as soothing cream the butt paste is the best. Shelby will get bm's that literally burn her skin when she is teething. The butt paste always makes it go away within a few hours. For the diarrhea try bananas! It won't make it go away 100% but it might slow it down a little....poor guy. I bet he is miserable!
